Hospital Response to Plant Explosion

Middletown, Ct. — Middlesex Hospital received a total of 27 patients from the incident on Sunday at the energy plant in Middletown. One patient with serious injuries was transported via the LIFESTAR medical helicopter to Hartford Hospital and another was transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital. Three patients were admitted to Middlesex Hospital and the remaining 22 patients were evaluated and discharged from Middlesex on Sunday night.

The types of injuries seen among the patients brought to Middlesex Hospital mainly included fractures and broken bones, back and abdominal injuries, ear drum injuries and bruising.

The Hospital’s disaster response system was activated shortly after noon on Sunday. Hospital staff regularly engages in drill exercises for disaster situations such as these and quickly had a coordinated team in place to respond to the incident.
