Middlesex Hospital Earns Magnet Status for Second Time
September 06, 2005
Middlesex Hospital has been redesignated as a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence by the American Nurses Association. In 2001, Middlesex became Connecticut's first Magnet hospital. Magnet status is achieved by less than 3% of hospitals in the United States.
The prestigious Magnet award is presented by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), an arm of the American Nurses Association. Magnet status is given to a hospital that demonstrates the highest levels of excellence in nursing service. It is based on fourteen rigorous standards that a hospital must meet or exceed.
Magnet designation (in effect for a four-year period) has become the "gold standard" for excellence in the field of nursing, but elusive to many hospitals. When Middlesex Hospital first received the designation in 2001, it became the 35th hospital in the country to do so.
"Magnet redesignation is often more challenging than the original process," according to Middlesex Hospital's Vice President for Nursing, Colleen Smith. "To say I am proud of our nurses for this achievement is an understatement. They continue to demonstrate their abilities, knowledge and outstanding commitment to the profession and this redesignation is a just reward for their efforts."
Hospital President and CEO Robert G. Kiely said, "My sincere congratulations to our nursing leaders and their exceptionally talented staff for their continuing demonstration of the highest standards of nursing practice. The Magnet process has become increasingly rigorous as more and more hospitals attempt to achieve Magnet status. It is a well-deserved honor, not only for our nurses, but for the entire staff of Middlesex Hospital."
