General surgeons specialize in the knowledge and skills relating to the diagnosis, preoperative, operative, and postoperative management in the following areas: gastrointestinal tract; abdomen; breasts, skin, and soft tissue; vascular system; pulmonary system; endocrine system; surgical oncology; management of trauma, including musculoskeletal, hand, and head injuries; and complete care of critically ill patients with underlying surgical conditions in the emergency department and intensive care units.
