Physiatrists (physicians specializing in physical medicine) are concerned with the diagnosis and nonsurgical management of patients with neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders such as spina bifida, traumatic brain and head injury, and muscular dystrophy. Physiatrists work closely with a variety of other specialists, including neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, internists, pediatricians and physical therapists, and others, to restore physical function and alleviate pain. Treatments can incorporate exercise, prosthetics, orthotics, and mechanical and electrical devices.
